Key Verse: 1 Chronicles 25:2

Of the sons of Asaph: Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah, and Asharelah; the sons of Asaph were under the direction of Asaph, who prophesied according to the order of the king.

Asaph, along with David and others, wrote Psalms (click here for Psalm 50). Giving thanks and worshipping the Lord was a very important element of the services in the Temple. The Psalms were the content of their hymn book. We may be sure that if they had modern technology, the words of Asaph would have often been projected on a screen so that the congregation could sing along. The words and music of the hymns and Gospel songs have endured as instruments of worship sung directly to God (e.g. How Great Thou Art). They are a form of prophecy born in the inspiration of the Spirit of God. The Apostle Paul, who would have regularly participated in the music of the Jerusalem Temple, wrote these words: “…speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord” (Ephesians 5:19). Some translations start this verse with the words, “Encourage one another.” Verse 21 goes on to describe the content of the singing: “Giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

PRAYER FOR TODAY:

Lord God, I pray today the words written by Fanny Crosby and then put to music for congregational singing…“Thou, my everlasting portion! More than friend or life to me, all along my pilgrim journey, Saviour, let me walk with Thee. Close to Thee, close to Thee, close to Thee, close to Thee, all along my pilgrim journey, Saviour, let me walk with Thee.” I pray this in Jesus’ Name! Amen!

100 PERSONAL WORDS

While writing this blog, I’ve found myself breaking out singing the hymn, How Great Thou Art! Also, I have just sung the song of personal experience, Amazing Grace. This weekend I’ll be singing the world’s most popular song, “Happy Birthday”, to one of our great-grandchildren.  I’m so happy that my great-grandchildren are learning the Scriptures by singing them. We regularly sing God Rocks songs, which consist of Bible verses. Dozens of Scriptures have been put to music by the God Rocks composer, Bruce Stacey. When I need a lift for my heart, my attitude, and my spirit, I’ve proven that “singing and making melody” is a sure remedy. Here is a link to a video of one of the God Rocks Scripture songs.

Yours for “singing and making melody,”

David

  1. Inspiring to know the musicians prophesied when they played their instruments. Have more than one musical instrument but do not play them except for few tunes on my autoharp. Beautiful day here and great day yesterday on Father’s day. Would appreciate your prayers today as have an important meeting with an old friend. Thanks and God bless you!

  2. My friend’s daughter was removed from life support & the funeral is Wednesday. Mom is asking for prayer to give God’s Word to family & friends, clearly. This was particularly hard for Dad on Father’s Day. Nan was an amazing Christian School teacher & sports coach. She was 56.
Praying for you Ger. Scripture set to music stays for a lifetime with children. I can attest to that (from Christian camp experiences & Sunday school).

    • Doreen,I pray for strength for your friends family in the loss of their daughter. It will be difficult for them especially for the dad as she passed on Father’s Day. God is merciful and He will see them through. Blessings to all Eleanor M.

      • Doreen, I pray for the Comfort and Peace that only comes for God to surround the family, as He keeps them in the Palm of His hand, in this time of sorrow and mourning!

      • Praying with all the saints for your friend’s family in the loss of their precious daughter, Doreen. May God give them healing and comfort. Amen.

“The greatest honor we can give Almighty God is to live gladly because of the knowledge of his love” (Julian of Norwich).

Singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord truly is joyful.

  5. May God comfort your friend and family at this sad time and pray the Gospel will be shared with family and friends clearly. Thank you for your prayers Doreen and may the Lord comfort you as well. God bless you.

  6. Prayed for you,Ger.Also prayed for the family and loved ones of Nan,that He would touch them to show how real He is.Just one touch of His amazing love is all they would need to carry the fire….
This is how sometimes a poem can intrude while writing.
    Recounting.

Just one touch of His amazing love
Is all they need to carry the fire,
For not from earth but from above
Come such words when angels conspire.

So let us open our mouths and hearts
To sing of heaven’s great love for us
With the joy that this song imparts
When we share the love of Jesus.

‘T is our duty to share this great gift
When the world around us is drowning,
For the words will cause a great shift
When these souls stand up for recounting.

(As poems, most are poor to mediocre but it’s the message that counts. )
We had our last council meeting before the camp begins in a few weeks. Our new camp director is a Godsend and has everything in hand.
Our Mens’ Club finishes ministering for the summer today. Thanks again to the Mainse family for this teaching.God bless
    Inspired by Psalm 73:24-25
With wise counsel Thou will guide me
‘Til in glory Thou make me free,
For Who in heaven have I but Thee
And with no mortal I choose but with Thee to be,
    For earthly strength may up and flee;
But Thou be my portion for eternity.

  7. Amazing rock formation! thanks Reynold for sharing this photo with us: Praise God that the scrolls were found: I believe that was God’s idea!

Thanks for posting the “God Rocks” scripture songs!

    the Psalms speak to us:
The Lord spoke to my heart with these: Psalm 46:1 “God is my refuge and my strength, a very present help in trouble”
Psalm 40:1-3a “I waited patiently for the Lord; He turned to me and heard my cry.
He brought me out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a
Rock, and established my goings. And He has put a new song in my heart, even praise unto our God:

Yes, names are important to God; though can be boring to read.

    Have a blessed day saints
