CHIEF CORNERSTONE

Today’s Reading: Ephesians 2

Click scripture link to read online or HERE to listen online (then click the symbol of the audio speaker above the scripture portion).

Ruins of the Celsus Library…one of the most beautiful structures in Ephesus. It was built in 117 A.D. as a monumental tomb for Gaius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus, the governor of the province of Asia. The grave of Celsus was beneath the ground floor across the entrance and there was a statue of Athena over it, because she was thought to be the goddess of wisdom.

Key Verses: Ephesians 2:19-20

Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone.

Christians take note! Our position in Christ is established! By the end of the second chapter, we have the words “in Christ” (or its equivalent) 19 times. Are we beginning to get the message? We are no longer the walking dead! (verses 1-3). We have been raised up! We “sit together in the heavenly places in Christ” (verse 6). Verse 11 begins with “Therefore” (as the result of the foregoing), which is a turn-around word…(1) We are alive in Christ; (2) We experience the exceeding riches of His grace; (3) We are saved through faith, a gift of God; (4) We are created in Christ Jesus for good works (works do not produce any favour from God, but they follow as a result of His favour); (5) We are citizens of His Kingdom with all the privileges that pertain thereto; (6) We are family–His DNA can be traced within us; and (7) We are a holy temple, God’s habitation!

We are “in Christ” and He is living in us! It is very, very humbling to recognize that, other than opening our hearts to Him, He’s done it all!

PRAYER FOR TODAY:

Lord God, I pray that I will comprehend, as much as I have the capacity to do so, the magnitude of Your blessing on me. Please assist me to recognize that my behaviour does not determine Your blessing, but Your blessing determines who I am. Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! I am blessed! Blessed! Blessed! Amen!!!

100 PERSONAL WORDS:

I made my lifetime decision to be a follower of Jesus at 16 years old, but it was not until I was 19 that I fully realized my position “in Christ.” It was then that I studied “The Doctrines of Salvation,” first in a Bible correspondence course and then in Bible College. The book “Lectures in Systematic Theology” by Henry C. Thiessen was a companion to my Bible. This book is for sale on Amazon or can be purchased on Kindle for iPad reading (click here). I find Thiessen’s teachings concise and carefully Biblical. In fact, I would recommend this study as foundational to every other Bible study curriculum.

The words from today’s reading, “Chief Cornerstone,” stood out to me because of much time spent with our First Nations people. Over again and again, I heard them refer to their true Chief, Jesus Christ, as their “Chief Cornerstone.” I have the great honour of being an honourary Chief of the Oneidas. I’m reminded that Jesus is my Chief, now and forever!

Yours for learning who we are as believers in Jesus, our Chief Cornerstone,

David

P.S. Yesterday was my son Ron’s 54th birthday. Ron and Ann’s daughter Andrea has her birthday on the same day! Ron pointed out to me this week that we had almost 32,000 blog readers’ comments. To you who are reading this and have never let me know, please do so today, if possible. I don’t get to answer each one, but I do read them all with thankfulness and prayers of God’s blessing on each person whose name I see.

The Celsus Library facade has two stories with Corinthian style columns on the ground floor and three entrances to the building. There are three window openings in the upper story. They used an optical trick…the columns on the sides of the facade are shorter than those at the center, giving the illusion of the building being greater in size.

  3. Thank you for being so committed and faithful in posting this Bible Study daily. This is my second time around and I rarely miss a day this time. If I do I make sure I catch up as every day brings me closer to God’s heart. You and 100 Huntley Street are the reasons I became baptized in the Holy Spirit and there’s been no
turning back, nor the desire to
Turn back, in 24 years. Thank you for answering Jesus’ call to spread the Good News. I heard that call and look forward to meeting you some day in Paradise. You are blessed and highly favoured David. Shalom.

  4. Thank you David Mainse for your servant heart to produce his devotional daily for several years now. My parents were avid 100 Huntley St viewers and supporters. There is a memory stone in your walkway outside your building , my parents purchased for their youngest son David Prentiss , in his memory many years ago. When I follow the Tv broadcasts and this blog I feel a great comfort and
connection to them too. They trusted and respected this ministry . Your wife and yourself reflected a standard they wanted to reflect also. They prayed 22 years for me to come to the Lord. Praise God I did before either of my parents passed away. Immediately I turned to 100 Huntley St for daily teaching and encouragement . It has been 24 years now. I am grateful and blessed daily by this blog and 100 Huntley St also. I pray I will get to see you in person on Juky 1 in my home town of Kingston for The Cry Kingston. I live in Thunder Bay . Thank you ????

  25. Dear Mr. Mainse,
Thank you for your generous, daily effort of providing us your instructive daily blog.
You show us that a good tree will produce good fruit even in its adulthood. You are young at heart and your affection for God and for the church is inspiring.

I spent nearly thirty years in the Pentecostal church but have returned to the catholic church a few years ago. Nevertheless, your teachings are still relevant to me.

Blessings on you and yours forever,

    Mike

You asked that we post a comment and so I am doing so – we are not too computer literate so have to really work at figuring these things out! We start our day by following your blog and I find it a wonderful blessing to have your words as part of my devotional every day. Even on trips, as a matter of fact especially on trips, we can be in touch with you for daily guidance and blessing. Thank you and your family for all you do to create this blog, it has blessed us tremendously! We started watching 100 Huntley Street many years ago, again, thank you.

  31. Yes I love this blog , I have been keeping up to date from the blog stated

    and keep you well.Rosemarie….

  32. Eleanor: Yesterday, you mentioned “International Workers” in Turkey as one of the Christian Ministries. Do you have a contact for IW? Eastern Turkey is my background heritage. My father immigrated to Canada in 1907. I am very interested as “light of Christ” is starting to shine in various locations in Turkey. I became a Christian in 1960 at the age 17. My Grandfather was a Muslim Eman (died when my dad was 2). (However, the link of our background in Turkey has been lost). We only have the bit of information my dad shared with us when we were quite young. My dad had rejected both the Muslim & Christian Faith – more because of ‘religion’ than probably a belief in God. I was converted after my dad’s death. He would not have been pleased. But I have always prayed that he had made his peace with God before he died. Your comments just triggered this response.

  33. I have been reading your blog from the start and do not miss a morning. I could not be without the blog every morning. Thank you very much for this blog and I am sorry I have not commented before. Reading the blog is such a part of my life I could not be without it

  34. Amen, David! Yes, I have been with you since the beginning and so enjoy the daily bible study and blog with the saints. Blessings to all as I am up at Wesley Acres and in the Picton library until I get the internet set up.

May integrity and uprightness preserve me, for I wait for thee.
    Ps 25:21 RSV

  35. Amazing photos! thank you and for the comments concerning them!!

What a powerful and comforting message in today’s reading: the key verse “we are not longer foreigners or strangers but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God….”Jesus Christ is the Chief cornerstone” in the foundation!!! We are family…how awesome!! and Amazing!! but true, according to His Word!!!

Praise Him, Praise Him, Jesus our Blessed Redeemer!!
