GOD’S CHOICE

Today’s Reading: 1 Samuel 16

This is the entrance to the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, the hometown of King David. This is the oldest functioning church building in the world. It is believed to cover the stable/cave where Jesus was born.

Key Verse: 1 Samuel 16:7b

For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.

The key verse points out several truths. (1) The Lord sees us! (2) Other people see us! (3) The Lord sees our hearts! (4) People see our outward appearance! Lets cover those four points starting with point four. Rather than slavishly following the latest clothing trends, let us ask God if our apparel draws undo attention to us, detracting from our witness. Three – Go ahead and wear our hearts in such a way that people see our hearts. Two – May people see in us the Person of Jesus in all His beauty. One – The old hymn says, “Dressed in His righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne.” Here’s a link to “The Solid Rock.” The last verse has those powerful words in it. Why not sing along.
Samuel found David, who was doing his job looking after the sheep while all the rest of the family were standing around. God chooses a person whose heart is engaged with life and its responsibilities. John 15 says, “You did not choose Me, I chose you” – Jesus. 1 Peter 2:9 says, “You are a chosen people.” Why are we chosen? To “declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light” (read 1 Peter 2:9-17).

PRAYER FOR TODAY:

Lord Jesus, I ask that everyone I meet today will see You. You live in my heart. I am, according to Your Word, the temple of the Holy Spirit. You are looking on my heart. If You see anything that should not be there, please clean it out of me now and forever. May Your love, Your joy, and Your peace be seen by all those with whom I interact. In Your Name I pray, Amen!

100 PERSONAL WORDS:

When Norma-Jean gets up, I may suggest that we sing together “The Solid Rock.” While it’s true that we are joined as one flesh before God, I’ll still have to stand as an individual at the judgment of the believers. Getting up at 4 a.m. is not Norma-Jean’s calling from God. When we were first married, I asked her to get up and pray with me. That did not go over too well. She spends considerable time praying before she sleeps at night. Whereas I’m far too sleepy at night to do more than a brief, “See You in the morning Lord.” I’m asleep long before my wife finishes reading my blog for the day, the suggested Scriptures and praying. So I concluded that between the two of us, we cover more of the 24-hour clock this way! She’s a night person, and I’m a morning person. Fifty-nine years of marriage (this September), and we’re still deeply committed to each other (that’s true love!). It’s a miracle of God’s grace! Amen! As I’m typing this, she’s still sleeping soundly. I often remind Norma-Jean before I fall asleep that over and over God promises rest to the weary.

Yours for seeing our hearts as God sees our hearts,

David

This newer church is where the Christmas Eve celebration takes place and is televised live worldwide. In a cave beneath this building, St. Jerome translated the Bible from Hebrew and Greek into what is known as the Latin Vulgate Version.

    Search Me

    Search me,oh Lord,I’m your’s,
    Remove the cobwebs that hide,
Find out what my heart stores,
Then put the wrong far to one side.

    Search again,oh Lord,for light,
Let not darkness cloud my mind,
That I may freely do what’s right,
For I want a heart clean and kind.

    Search my soul,Oh Lord,for me;
Don’t let me be vain and phony,
For such get lost and can’t see,
    Then become the devil’s crony.

    Search my heart,oh Lord again,
Leave no trace of greed within,
    Then I can show,without pain,
The love that was stopped by sin.

  2. As a song leader, I requested we sing, “The Solid Rock” last Sunday. It is a favorite our church as is many who love the Lord. Meditating on the fact that David was prepared to be the King by God by his invitation to the Royal Court by Saul to be his musician. Similarly, Moses was prepared to be the leader by being brought up in the palace of the Pharaoh. God always prepares His man both inwardly as the lesson is today and outwardly.

  3. Still with you in Bible reading. Thankful each day for His word and faithfulness.
I appreciate the insight you give on the scripture for the day,as well as personal items.
    .

  4. Today’s reading stirred me to such great depths of understanding. Over the past few days I watched all ten episodes of The Bible miniseries by Roma Downey and Mark Burnett, which really put me in the place of the scriptures we have been reading. Wishing you David and all saints all a blessed evening!

    He does not delight in the strength of the horse;
He takes no pleasure in the legs of a man.
The Lord takes pleasure in those who fear Him,
In those who hope in His mercy. Ps 147:10-11

  5. God bless you Norma-Jean! I also am a night person, it’s called NOCTURNAL, I go to sleep around 4 a.m. and wake up around noon! This happened 3 years ago! It works well for me but I have to adjust my schedule and sometimes I am not able to do things, I just go and let God take care of it….

prayers needed! I though our issue in my Mobile Park was settled! Well it is not! Please pray for God’s Mighty Grace to be with Michael as he prepares to fight against an outlandish increase in rent!

Please pray the Holy Spirit enters the hearts of the owners and that they will be brought to their knees and seek the Lord God and confess their sins and ask Jesus Christ into their hearts……

Our Father who art in Heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name………

  6. Praise God, who looks on the inside of us; where out heart is! Not on the outside appearance, that can appear great, but very often is not what it appears to be..

Jesus said: “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs; beautiful on the outside but filled on the inside with dead people’s bones and all sorts of impurity.” Mathew 23:27
Mathew 23:28: ” Outwardly you look like righteous people, but inwardly your hearts are filled with hypocrisy and lawlessness.”

I can relate with Norma-Jean, I, too, am a night person. That was quite a problem during the time I was in the work-force, as most offices are made for people of the morning:)
