DAN TO BEERSHEBA

Today’s Reading: Judges 20

Dan is a city mentioned in the Bible and described as the northernmost city of the Kingdom of Israel, belonging to the Tribe of Dan. Seen here is the main entrance to the ancient city of Dan. Beersheba, or Beersheva, as it is now known in Hebrew, is the most southwestern city. Crossroads was, at my last visit, recognized on a plaque in the entrance to the children's wing of the hospital at Beersheva. We raised a large amount of money to help build the wing in honour of Dr. Nelles Silverthorne, a famous Canadian researcher paediatrician, who often appeared on 100 Huntley Street. The hospital serves both Bedouin Arab children and Jewish children.

Key Verse: Judges 20:20a

And the men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin…

Israel had extremely hard lessons to learn. Again they were fighting members of their own family; all of them were children of Abraham. When people are estranged from God, trouble and divisions usually follow. This happens in individual families as well as in nations. Inevitably, the cause of the conflict is the curse of sin…sin against God and against people. In America this happened in the Civil War. People whose roots were mainly in the United Kingdom were killing each other, perhaps as many as 500,000 died just 150 years ago. The book, Killing Lincoln, speaks of the President’s well-worn Bible, which has many notes written in the margins. The last two US Presidents laid their hands upon that very Bible when they were sworn into office. We can be sure that President Lincoln believed he was directed by God to remove the curse of slavery from the land. It’s easy for us to second-guess decisions made by leaders. Jesus was so revolutionary (not in a military way) that He taught us to love our enemies. We should ask ourselves the question, “How well are we obeying His commandment to love unconditionally?”

PRAYER FOR TODAY:

Lord God, I find it difficult to understand Your unconditional love. It amazes me that You, Lord Jesus, chose to die rather than call on a mighty army of angels to destroy the world and all who did such evil against You. I pray for a greater measure of Your love to fill me up to overflowing. Help me to show my love for You by loving all people, even those who would consider themselves my enemies. Amen!

100 PERSONAL WORDS:

In preparation for our next book in this blog, 1st Corinthians, I’ve been reading ahead. Last night I read 1st Corinthians, chapter 13. It occurred to me that this chapter is a description of the way Jesus lived His life. He was and is the very embodiment of love. He is “the Glory of God.” It’s not hard for me to believe that “All have sinned and fall short of the Glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Love is the only way to make an enemy a friend. Through the years I’ve discovered this wisdom in my relationships with Government, with the media, and with people in general, and in particular those with whom I disagree. On this basis, our TV network, YES TV, has opened its door in various TV productions to spokespersons of varying opinions.

Norma-Jean mentioned to me the Frank Sinatra love song, Young At Heart, has a line in it, “If you should survive to 105…” George Beverly Shea, who lived almost to 105, recorded the powerful song, The Love of God. If I can find it online, I’ll put it in my blog (click here). Could this be George’s secret to long life? For years he watched the 100 Huntley Street telecast on his computer every day! What a great man!!!

Yours for living and loving,

David

P.S. Here is a satellite map of the territory (Dan to Beersheba) from which the tribes gathered to fight against Benjamin because of the outrage they felt at the perversion of the men of Gibeah (Judges 19:22-30).

  1. With so many souls killed both from the Benjaminites as well as from the Israelites. How many must has there been, that so many were killed? And also the whole City was burned? Yet, Praise God there are still all Twelve Tribes in existence!!!

Yes, indeed Pastor David God’s commandment is that we love even our enemies. And I joined with you in prayer!!

My desire too Lord is “for a greater measure of love to fill me to overflowing” , so it reaches to the highest mountain and flows to the lowest valley, to those that are not the easiest to love, but You Oh Lord love them all unconditionally.

Lord I pray for unity within families.

Always appreciate your interpretation of scripture, and the input with the precious photos you post. Thank you Pastor David and all who bring this daily manna to us. Bless you Norma-Jean for your love and care for Pastor David!!

How blessed we are to “Have the love of God, so rich and pure, so measureless and true” in our hearts!!!

  2. Thank you Pastor David,, I to believe that love is the only way it says in Matthew 5:44 that we are to do this very thing. I do appreciate you and your family that make this blog possible. I thank the Lord for this beautiful Ssturday, my husband put the bed sheets on the line and they smell so fresh.
Blessings to all as we in Canada celebrate Family Day weekend.
Prayers going up for Mary and her dear husband for complete healing.

  3. Yesterday someone made the comment that 100Huntley was no longer against divorce or abortion. I wonder how this person ever got that notion. I can assure you that 100 Huntley does not support divorce or abortion. That assertion is absolutely false. I am not authorized to speak on behalf of 100 Huntley Street, but I know that they would never believe in Divorce or the practice of Abortion.

  4. I just loved seeing George Beverley Shay and hearing the anointed song. We will see him and the other amazing singers when we reach heaven! How Wonderful! Keeping you in prayer and thank you so much for all you and family do to attend to this blog.

  5. I really appreciate the journey we are on through the bible. Your insite, love for the Lord and openness to share encourages me in the faith. Thank you for your kind and loving heart. Not everyone comes from a loving Christian family but God encourages me by your example.

  6. Praise God and thank everybody who commented about a blog from yesterday from Paul T regarding abortion and divorce! I am hoping Paul will talk to David or Ron or Reynold about his view on these subjects! I could be wrong but I don’t believe 100 Huntley supports these views, they pray about these issues as we all should and we need to send letters to our government leaders and Pastors and church workers regarding what God says about killing! Thou shalt not kill!
As for divorce I am very thankful that Ron and Ann Mainse started their Marriage Ministry! I feel very strongly that these types of courses, workshops, counselling sessions are very important for husbands and wives!
I am a strong believer in having relationship courses for our young people! Courses for the girls, and courses for the boys! Both girls and boys need to understand how to treat each other! I could write pages on this subject but all I ask is that we pray for Pastors to be talking and planning to have these courses offered for the young people in our communities! I believe it should be faith based, God’s plan of creation taught, what His Words say about a man and a woman and children…..we are never without something to pray about! Let us all pray for our young people, that they receive good Christian teaching whether they believe or not….I remember when I was young…..I sure could have used some counselling as a teenager and how to handle boys and the boys could have used some counselling on how to handle girls…..Lord we bring this to Your attention and ask that You will provide…amen

  7. Yes, it was wonderful to listen to George Beverly Shea sing on Gaither’s Gospel again. He was an amazing servant of the Lord. I am not sure where Paul from yesterday got his incorrect information from but it is important that we all rectify errors of that nature immediately. Blessings dear saints in the Lord.

This is a very interesting article– a must read on Motion 103
