EQUIPPED TO SERVE

Today’s Reading: Luke 10

This covering is built over the place thought to be the Good Samaritan Inn, on an ancient road between Jerusalem and Jericho. In my "100 Personal Words" I tell the story of my friend Bob who learned a "Good Samaritan" lesson.

Key Verse: Luke 10:18-19

And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you…”

Here we are back in school as “Talmudim,” students in Jesus’ study class for disciples. First, Jesus teaches us that He has a prayer request of us! (verse 2). Second, Jesus says “Yes” to His prayer request when we pray it. He says to us, “You, yes you, are the answer to My request for prayer.” Third, Jesus equips us for the harvest of precious souls by giving us His authority. Fourth, He teaches us to beware of the sin of pride in the results He gives us. Jesus does not say, “Good job” to the seventy. He immediately refers to Satan’s fall from Heaven as a result of pride and the desire for self exaltation. Fifth, Jesus instructs us that the greatest reason for His joy and our rejoicing is the fact that our names are written in Heaven. Sixth, as any good trial lawyer, the man who asked the question of Jesus already knew the answer. Seventh, The Good Samaritan story teaches what true ministry is all about. Eighth, like Mary, we learn to sit at Jesus’ feet and learn from Him.

PRAYER FOR TODAY:

Lord Jesus, the prayer request You ask Your pupils to pray is obviously very important to You. I’m available as a labourer in Your harvest field. “Here I am, send me” (Isaiah 6:8). I ask You, Lord, to consider this blog as a small part of my daily labour. Help me to be a Holy Spirit starter, and not just a self starter for the rest of today and tonight until I retire to bed. Amen!!!

100 PERSONAL WORDS:

When I work in His harvest field, all I have to do is pray with anyone who’s willing to have me pray with them, share the Word of God concerning their need, give money and time, work with my hands whenever the opportunity presents itself, and Jesus will take care of the results. He will accomplish His purpose in each willing mind and heart. He gets all the credit. According to Luke 17:10, having done my duty, I’m to consider myself an “unprofitable servant.” I know that the correct attitude will enable me to avoid the sin of Satan, pride.

I am reminded of the Good Samaritan by Reynold’s picture. I have a friend named Bob Curle who spoke in our chapel recently. He said, “I always prayed to be the Good Samaritan, and one morning while sitting in Church the Lord spoke to me. He said, ‘You can’t be the Good Samaritan, that’s My job. You are the innkeeper. I’ll bring hurting needy people to you. I’ll provide the necessary funds, and when I return you’ll be paid in full.'” I really enjoy going to Jesus’ school daily.

Yours for the best education in the universe,

David

P.S. As I indicated yesterday, Luke, as an historian, covers 70 years of history. All major religions, other than Judaism and Christianity, have as their essential writings mystical or instructional books which originate with a prophet or teacher. Because they are personal and private writings, they cannot be proven either true or false. Luke, on the other hand, gives names of persons, places and public events. The historical accuracy of his work can be proven to anyone who does not let personal bias blind his eyes to truth (more, God willing, over the next few days).

  1. Another all encompassiong and enriching message, from Jesus to His disciples in Luke 10, and us, His Talmudim. Thank you for such a thorough and meaningful teaching and explanation of the scripture, David! We go out as workers into Your harvest field, spreading the Word of Your love, Jesus!

“Give me a new idea,” I said,
    While musing on a sleepless bed;
“A new idea that’ll bring to earth
    A balm for souls of priceless worth;
That’ll give men thoughts of things above,
And teach them how to serve and love,
    That’ll banish every selfish thought
And rid men of sins they’ve fought.”

The new thought came, just how I’ll tell:
‘Twas when on bended knee I fell,
And sought from HIM who knows full well
The way our sorrow to expel.
SEE GOD IN ALL THINGS, great and small,
And give HIM praise what’er befall,
In life or death, in pain or woe,
See God, and overcome thy foe.

I saw HIM in the morning light,
    HE made the day shine clear and bright;
I saw HIM in the noontide hour,
And gained from HIM refreshing shower.
At eventide, when worn and sad,
HE gave me help, and made me glad.
At midnight, when on tossing bed
My weary soul to sleep HE led.

I saw HIM when great losses came,
And found HE loved me just the same.
When heavy loads I had to bear,
I found HE lightened every care.
    By sickness, sorrow, sore distress,
HE calmed my mind and gave me rest.
HE’S filled my heart with gladsome praise
Since I gave HIM the upward gaze.

‘Twas new to me, yet old to some
This thought that to me has become
    A revelation of the way
    We all should live throughout the day;
For as each day unfolds its light,
We’ll walk by faith and not by sight.
Life will, indeed, a blessing bring,
If we SEE GOD IN EVERYTHING.”
    -A.E. Finn.

Blessings, dear saints, in the Lord. I wish you a day filled with pure joy!

  2. Just listened to this uplifting worship song and wanted to share:

    “With All I Am”
    Hillsong

Into Your hand I commit again
With All I am For You Lord
You hold my world in the palm of Your hand
    And I’m Yours forever

    Jesus I believe in You
    Jesus I belong to You
You’re the reason that I live
The reason that I sing with all I am

I’ll walk with You wherever You go
Through tears and joy I’ll trust in You
And I will live in all of Your ways
    Your promises forever

    Jesus I believe in You
    Jesus I belong to You
You’re the reason that I live
    The reason that I sing

    Jesus I believe in You
    Jesus I belong to You
You’re the reason that I live
The reason that I sing with all I am

I will worship, I will worship You
I will worship, I will worship You
I will worship, I will worship You
I will worship, I will worship You

I will worship, I will worship You
I will worship, I will worship You
I will worship, I will worship You
I will worship, I will worship You

    Jesus I believe in You
    Jesus I belong to You
You’re the reason that I live
    The reason that I sing

    Jesus I believe in You
    Jesus I belong to You
You’re the reason that I live
    The reason that I sing

    Jesus I believe in You
    Jesus I belong to You
You’re the reason that I live
The reason that I sing with all I am

I will worship, I will worship You
I will worship and I will worship You

  3. Lord, as was with the Good Samaritan, equip us with the strength and empathy to take action when action is required. May we not turn a blind eye to those whom we can assist. You promise eternal life to those who love you and others as self. No one has said this will be easy. You do promise however that even in our weakness, we find strength in You. Amen.

  4. Amen. Thank you Lord Jesus for the privilege of being your” Talmudim” and worker in your harvest field. Help us to avoid the sin of pride. Thank you Lord for our earthly teacher; David Mainse as well and the great example you have enabled him to be to us. Continue to give him wisdom and strength. Also continue to bless our fellow bloggers who have contributed to our spiritual growth. In Jesus Name, Amen!

  5. The man who wrote the book “Cold Case Christianity”, Jim Wallace I believe, has done a wonderful job of proving God’s word.
Blessings fellow bloggers and will NEVER be able to say thank you enough Rev. DM et al for this daily study so will just say thank you and may God bless you all.

  6. God’s blessings are new every day, and I feel so very blessed to have been with all of you from the beginning and having the great privilege of praying for and with many of you.

Thank you Pastor David for the historical facts from Luke. Thank you fellow saints for your comments, songs and poems.

  7. Lamentations 3:19 “Remembering mine afflictions and my misery…3:20 My soul has them still in remembrance, and is humbled in me. 3:21 This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. 3:21-25 It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. The Lord is my portion, says my soul; therefore will I hope in Him.”
Thank You Lord that it is of Your mercies I am are not consumed, and that Your compassions are new every morning:
    “GREAT IS YOUR FAITHFULNESS”!!

The song that came to mind is: “I WILL SERVE YOU” (It is the Lord Christ we are serving. Col. 3:24)”
“I will serve Thee, because I love Thee,You have given life to me; I was nothing before You found me, You have given life to me. Heart-ache broken pieces, ruined lives are why You dies on Calvary; You touch was what I longed for, You have given life to me.”

Thank you David for sharing re Bob Curle; it reminded me that I am not the “Good Samaritan, but the Inkeeper”. Good lesson to keep in mind.

Your picture creation Reynold is beautiful, thank you for sharing.
